Korean cell phone makers should go through revolutionary changes to face up to the threat from Apple’s 3G iPhone, according to a recent report.
LG Economic Research Institute called for consumer-oriented market approach, fundamental reform with the primary focus on software and the establishment of a “platform-application operator” model.
The LGERI report said 3G iPhone will promote the smartphone market and draw attention to the importance of software for a mobile handset. As the growth of 3G iPhone in the mobile market will possibly jeopardize the future of domestic cell phone makers, Korean manufacturers should be well prepared for the danger.
The report also urged Korean cell phone markers to adapt to the changing market trend toward software-centered competition. Though the Korean mobile market is still led by hardware, software platform will become the most important source of competitiveness in the near future, the report explained.
The institute emphasized the importance of customer-oriented market approach like Apple’s. Companies should promptly accept consumers’ needs and decide what to recognize from the surroundings from an early stage.
Korean companies should focus on internet service platform as the distinctive point for their applications, for an instance, by forging alliances with online game developers with strong internet applications, the report added.
2G iPhone sales hit the one million mark 74 days after it was launched. 3G iPhone, however, shortened the time to only three days. Industry sources anticipate that Apple will easily achieve the goal to sell 10 million 3G iPhones within this year.
CJ Investment & Securities said that 3G iPhone might be released in Korea in next year by KTF, the country’s leading WCDMA provider. To make it happen, the government regulation that obligates all 3G phones sold in local market to include WIPI platform, should be abolished first, said CJ.
